13 Below Brewery Review- Craft Beer worth the drive

Updated: Jun 13, 2019

After a lot of schedule arranging and back and forth emails, I finally found an opening in my schedule to get out to 13 Below Brewery and meet Doug, one of the owners. I mapped out the route and it was easy...get to Cincinnati and head west. Its a beautiful drive along the Ohio river, a few miles past Anderson Ferry on 50 West. As you come up on Fernbank Park and turn in, there is a small sign for 13 Below Brewery. Turn left to head to the park and work up a thirst for craft beer, and then straight down the road to visit the brewery.

13 Below is much larger than I expected, with ample seating for a large crowd and plenty of room for a band. Games, including corn-hole and a larger Connect 4 fill the far corner and T-shirts, hats and other items, all with their eye-catching logo fill the wall. One of the features inside is the investor wall, which pays homage to the people who believed in and supported the team from their initial start-up and opening nearly 2 years ago.

But, we really came there for the craft beer, so it was time to choose a flight and get a sample of what 13 Below was all about. Having a preference for dark beers, I ordered up the Rail & River Porter, the Fluss Bock, the Confused 13 Brown Ale and of course, the powerhouse Wedding Day -Belgian Tripel.

I absolutely loved the Fluss Bock. It reminded me of spring time in Germany right after a keg tapping. I enjoyed the Porter and the Brown Ale (and it was a darker brown), but the Tripel stole the show. With a 9.7% ABV, I expected to note a tinge of alcohol taste, but this was malty, smooth and flavorful. Much richer in color than other Tripels I have tasted and definitely one of the best beers I have tried in this style. After the flight, it was easy to see why 13 Below had received awards and recognition. These guys know their beer. Co-owner Doug discussed how the team got started in the home-brew world and kept honing their craft until it was time to take their beers to the masses and share their libation creation. After thoroughly enjoying a flight, it is time to nominate 13 Below Brewery for the upcoming Beer League Round 3 to be held in Union, KY in mid-late June.

13 Below is located at 7391 Forbes Rd, Cincinnati, Ohio, 13 nautical miles below Cincinnati. It sits next to Fernbank Park, just before you get to Addyston. Currently, the brewery does not bottle or can (maybe in the future?), so get a growler or three to take home. The brewery does have simple food, you can get a bag of chips, popcorn, or a hot pretzel. On busier days and times, several food trucks will visit, especially during the weekend hours to keep patrons happy. There is a nice outdoor area, plenty of parking, and if you go out back, you can see hops growing for decoration...or maybe for a special secret brew in the future??? On weekends, you can even see runners in and out of the brewery as 13 Below sponsors a run club. It is one of the many connections to the park and community 13 Below supports. Bands on the weekends and trivia on Thursday. I wished I lived closer to this location.
